Family driving rental to Boston for NHL Winter Classic after Southwest flights delayed
With the NHL Winter Classic set for Boston’s Fenway Park in less than a week, one family — who was planning to fly to Boston on Southwest — is not letting the airline’s meltdown stop them from getting to Beantown.Tim Maher and his family are trying to get to Boston for the big event, the gift of a lifetime for his 17-year-old son. “He said, ‘The one gift I want is I want to go back to Boston for the Classic,’” Maher said. Maher bought tickets to the Boston Bruins Winter Classic, booked flights for the family — and were prepared to head to the East Coast from Phoenix. It was smooth sailing until he got to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. The family’s Southwest flight was delayed, over and over and over. “We would be there to this day, them saying, ‘Standby, standby, standby,’” Maher said. After spending some time resting on the airport floor, he and his wife made the decision that flying the so-called friendly skies, wasn’t an option. “I said, ‘It’s not happening. Like, nothing’s happening,’” Maher said. Maher said the family went home, grabbed a few hours of sleep, packed some extra clothes, and started driving east. They rented an Enterprise truck, packed up the kids, and hit the road, driving the approximately 2,600 miles from Phoenix to Boston, unwilling to miss the Bruins taking the ice at Fenway Park. “Just be there in the bleachers,” Maher said. “It’s just awesome. Boston’s awesome.”A flight fiasco that’s creating family memories for a lifetime.
